REGULAR ACTIVITIES
PUBLISHING DEPARTMENT
EDICIJE DSS
Between 1951 and 1954, the publishing section of the Society (Edicije DSS – Ed. DSS) operated as a special unit within the state publishing house Državna založba Slovenije. Today, Edicije DSS is the most important sheet music publishing operation in Slovenia, with a catalogue of almost 2700 compositions by Slovene composers. Since 2003, DSS has also published works through “Muzicije DSS”, with some 350 works being made available to date. The digital form of these publications makes printing quicker and less expensive, enabling the Society to significantly increase the number of works published annually.
DISCOGRAPHY
One of the most important activities of the Society is supervising the release of recordings of contemporary Slovene music on compact disc and cassette. Approximately five compact discs are issued every year within the framework of the series Ars SlovenicA, which to date boasts a catalogue of some 90 releases.
LENDING SCORES AND ORCHESTRAL MATERIAL
Since 1972, the Society has collaborated with some of the most important European publishing houses, serving as the Slovene representative for the following publishers: Edition Musica Budapest, Edition Peters - Frankfurt, Breitkopf & Härtel - Wiesbaden, Schott Music International - Mainz, Universal Edition - Vienna and Boosey & Hawkes - London.
CONCERT MANAGEMENT
CONCERT ATELIER (KA DSS)
Since 1965, the Concert Atelier, the longest standing concert activity of the Society of Slovene Composers, has presented high quality world premieres of new works by Slovene composers. To date, there have been over 380 concerts, often presented in conjunction with exhibitions of Slovene painters and sculptors.
INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES
The key role of our international activities is to exchange information on the international level and to encourage the participation of our members in international festivals, symposiums, congresses and music trade fairs in Europe and throughout the world. We also endeavour to inform the general public and comparable professional institutions about our activities, in particular about concerts with new works by Slovene composers, and to arrange exchange concerts. Within the framework of international activities, particular mention should be made of the Society’s membership of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) and the European Composers Federation (ECF).
THE NIGHT OF SLOVENE COMPOSERS
Since 1989, the Society has organised an annual concert known as The Night of Slovene Composers. This event is today divided into three concerts (The Chamber Night of Slovene Composers, Slovene Composers to Youth and The Night of Slovene Composers), providing an opportunity for all members of the Society to present their new works in public.
UNICUM FESTIVAL
The Unicum Festival is a biennale festival of contemporary classical music organised by the Slovene section of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), featuring works by Slovene and foreign composers. Its predecessor was Musica Danubiana, a festival of music by composers from countries through which the Danube River flows: Austria, Bulgaria, The Czech Republic, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Germany, Slovakia, Rumania and Slovenia.
COMMISSIONING OF NEW WORKS
The commissioning of new works is one of the Society’s most important activities, ensuring the preservation, quality and reputation of Slovene music both in Slovenia and abroad. With the support of the Ministry of Culture, each year the Society commissions new works from our members to be performed with the framework of our concert activities.
